How is nickel used in industry?

Nickel was discovered by Axel Fredrik Cronstedt in 1751. Its name comes from ‘kupfernickel’, which means ‘Devil’s copper’ in German. It has a boiling point of 2,913°C and a melting point of 1,455°C. The metal is a silvery colour with a golden tinge and it is corrosion-resistant even at high temperatures. Nickel has a wide range of uses in many industries, so let’s take a closer look at some of them.

What are the uses of nickel?

According to the Royal Society of Chemistry, because nickel resists corrosion, it is often used as a protective coating on other metals. It is mined mainly in Canada and Russia. Pure nickel is found only in small quantities and it is mainly mined as ore.

Nickel composites can be created by incorporating reinforcing components in the nickel metal matrix. This improves strength, wear resistance, and frictional behaviour. There are many uses for nickel composites in industry.

Industrial uses of nickel

Nickel was used by our ancestors as far back as 3,500 BCE. These days, it is used primarily for corrosion-resistant plating and in alloys.

Stainless steel is an alloy used in the automotive and transportation industries, medical technology, the building trade, aircraft production, the food and drink industry, tanker manufacture, and vessel manufacture. It is a valuable alloy because of its strength, corrosion resistance and appearance, and because it is so easy to clean. It can also be recycled. Different grades of stainless steel are available for different uses. Some grades are non-magnetic, but others are magnetic. Some grades have better corrosion resistance than others. The cost of different grades is also variable.

Nichrome is an alloy made from nickel and chromium with small amounts of silicon, iron, and manganese. It is also corrosion-resistant, even when it is very hot. It is used in toasters and electric ovens. There is also a copper-nickel alloy, which is commonly used in desalination plants. Nickel is also used in batteries, coins, and in the catalysts used to produce vegetable oils.
