The fashion staple from the Emerald Isles

Ireland has provided us with many styles of clothing through the centuries. The Celtic weave, inspired by the ancient mythology of the country, has been the inspiration for hundreds of designs, from artwork to clothing. However, there is one piece of fashion that comes from Ireland that still is and always has been a design classic.  This is the men’s aran sweater. They are available in many colours and weaves from https://www.shamrockgift.com/aran-sweaters/mens-aran-sweaters/. Mens aran sweaters are the result of craft and skill from a small group of islands off the west coast of Ireland, at the head of Galway Bay.

They were originally created for the fishermen of the Islands. The wool of the merino sheep that were brought to Aran is particularly good at repelling water. It was quick to dry but was also warming. These were perfect for the rough Atlantic sea where the men worked. Their work was vital. With little chance of growing wheat and vegetables on Aran, fish and seafood were the main source of food.

The women of the island learnt to knit the sweater style from the people of Guernsey who lived in similar conditions. However, it was the cable knitting of the Irish women that caught the eye of fashion fans, and in the 20th Century, the sweater style soon became popular with everyone from Hollywood stars to hikers and people looking for a warm yet casual jumper on a cold winter’s day.
