  • What is Dementia?

The word ‘dementia’ refers to a group of symptoms that affect the brain (including recognition, memory, organisation and language), which get worse over time. Dementia is not a disease and not a natural part of aging. It is also usually not inherited.

Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia affect more than 850,000 people in the UK, most of them elderly. Here, we will explain the symptoms of dementia and why it is a good idea for your loved one to see their doctor if you or they are worried that they suffer from memory loss.

While the chances of developing dementia increase with age, damage rate varies according to the type of dementia, as well as one’s physical makeup, emotional resilience and use of prescription drugs.

    Spotting signs of dementia

One of the most frequently discussed dementia symptoms is memory lapse, the inability to recall things like names and words. But taken on their own, these do not always signal the start of dementia; they can also be the natural aging of the brain or other conditions.

For example, loss of concentration or withdrawal from people can be caused by anxiety or depression, and being confused can be side effects from taking different medication.

Dementia is a progressive condition, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse over time. This can make it difficult to see what is happening, or to know when to seek help. Each person will experience dementia in a different way.

The deterioration rate of memory will differ, too, because of how a person is affected and what symptoms they have. Dementia commonly affects recent memories as opposed to things that occurred in the past. This happens as dementia affects the storage of new memories in the brain. Misplacing objects

    Increasingly poor judgment

Poor judgment around money, such as a registration for the promotion of sales of door-to-door when they would not normally do.

Lack of attention to personal care and hygiene.

Withdrawal from work or social activities

Pulling away from a hobby or sport.

Become less involved in social activities and / or family.

Being unable to participate in a favourite pastime for no apparent reason.

    Changes in behaviour and personality

    Confusion or paranoia

    Become irritable.

    Being aggressive.

All of these can be signs of other conditions, but if you see this change in the people you support, encourage them to visit their doctor.

  • How to Get your town on the map?

Now it’s fair to say that your town is already on a map but are you getting people to actually come and visit it? Any influx of visitors is welcome to a town in terms of income but what if you want to increase it?. In Cheltenham its favour it does have a popular literature, Music, Food and Drink festival and famous racecourse. What you need is a strategy. Here is a short guide to what you need to do:

    1. Find the audience you want. It may seem harsh but you need to look at the town as a product and what are its benefits. You need to focus on those benefits in a direct way as that is the secret to making people come. They need to know that they will be enriched in some way either culturally or socially.
    2. Define the USP’s of the town. That’s probably easier said than done but you will need to get a list of 5 and, remembering to keep it fluid and work the marketing strategy around them. As we said before though you do need one solid performer in the USP camp that you can emphasis.  We know that some towns selling point is their community spirit, their houses and the aesthetics.  This is why a Essex Roofers company do a professional job every time to make sure they rooftops are in tip top condition.
    3. Keep it fluid. A strategy on marketing a small town does not mean rigidity. It’s very likely that your town will have more than one Unique selling point or USP as they are called, and you need to make room for all of it. You do however need one central message.
    4. Dream big. It’s very easy to assume that things will not work out. It depends on what your team’s outlook is. Positivity has its place you may say but a degree of negativity is needed for a reality check. You do need to really consider the other side of the coin. What if you have a great success? Imagine that. You then have the issue of how to manage that success and you do need to plan for that. How will visitors be managed? Can the shops and infrastructure handle the increase?
    5. Link it to the business plan. Both plans should complement each other and run alongside each other in tandem and harmony. Regularly check that you have a consistency between the two.
    1. Inform people what you are doing, especially to the wider community. You don’t just need the businesses on side you need to have the public on-board and prepared to help and support the vision that you have. Don’t be afraid to ask for volunteers either. Appeal to the civic duty in all of them.

All the best. The road is long but you’ll get there.

  • Can the Internet can be good for us?

Much media attention is given to the dangers of the internet and the reasons why we should all spend less time staring at screens. It’s true that we need to keep an eye on how many hours we become absorbed by computer, mobile or tablet screens and the internet can be a dark place if we don’t stay vigilant. However, it can be argued that the many benefits of the internet far outweigh the negative. Here we look at why the internet is good for us.

    Education

All of us, especially teens, can learn a great deal about subjects that they might otherwise be too embarrassed to talk about. Reputable websites offer huge amounts of information, advice and forums where people can find answers to their questions and share their experiences or concerns. For older people, the internet can be good for mental health. Studies have shown that people over the age of 60 who spend time online are more mentally active and less susceptible to suffering from depression.

Online courses also enable people to learn new subjects, who wouldn’t otherwise be able to study in the traditional way at a college or university. The number of people subscribing to online courses has increased by 96% in the last few years.

    The Economy

The internet does wonders for the economy and adds an average of 3.4% to the GDP of many countries worldwide. Jobs are created by the internet and for each job that appears in the technology sector, another 5 are created in associated services to support that position.

Having a strong online presence increases sales, improves customer communication and helps to keep the economy running. Such is the importance of having an online presence that almost all of the companies in countries of the OECD have websites.

This is why a company like www.lazyjuice.co.uk/ has a strong facebook page that is a Gloucester Vape Shop offering free same day delivery to gloucester residents if they order before 6pm.

The internet makes it so much easier to look for a job. Those who use online job sites and have access to searches and email are employed 25% faster than those who don’t use the internet.

    Communication

The ability for people to connect via Skype has meant that 300 million users have been able to chat to each other from any location in the world. Online dating is quickly becoming one of the main ways to meet new partners, so much so that in the 7 years between 2005 and 2012, a third of couples marrying in the United States had met each other online.

Email and messenger services make it possible to communicate instantly, anywhere in the world without the need for crackly phone lines or waiting for replies in the mail.

    Social Media

Whilst there will always be things to be wary of with social media, research has shown that it can lead people to make better informed decisions about health issues, encourage them to get second opinions about conditions and make them more likely to read consumer reviews about health-related products.

  • Good vs Evil – The internet

Life has changed so dramatically from life just twenty years ago. Our children have technology at their fingertips that we saw introduced when we were growing up.  Manufacturing has changed to the point where companies are buying used plant machinery instead of new to save a few pennies which is very sensible as they do the same job but cheaper.  We can remember a pre-internet age but they will never know life without instant access to anything they need. This is not necessarily a negative thing as the internet provides us with a whole new way of seeing the world and has so many incredible uses. Let’s take a look at why the internet is a great thing:

The internet can be good for our health. Particularly for young people, who may be embarrassed to discuss problems, the internet can be the source of a wealth of information about health and well-being. Reliable sites offer help, advice, health related information and contact details for problems with depression or sexuality.

The internet can also offer a social element in the lives of many older people too. A study carried out found that people over the age of 60 were more mentally active and less depressed when they spent time online. Many people use social networks to find out about health issues and find that even just sharing experiences of chronic illness, for example, can make people feel more positive. Any information that persuades that person to consult a doctor has got to be a positive thing.

The internet is beneficial to our economy. It creates jobs and for each job created in the technology industry, 5 more are born in other branches, for example, support roles. For at least 13 countries, the internet provides 3.4% to GDP, including the UK. Sales on the internet are so high that they equal the GDP produced by Canada every year and more than what is produced by Australia. That is quite a contribution to the world’s economy. In the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, 95% of the companies have an online presence. An online presence is crucial for sales and the customer-seller relationship.

Communication is so much easier with the internet. Over the last decade Skype has connected more than 300 million people worldwide. People are also using the internet to find love and between 2005 and 2012 over a third of married couples in America had met online. Rather bizarrely the number of people separating and divorcing are lower for those who met each other on the internet.

The internet helps us to learn. There are a plethora of online courses these days so anyone can really learn about anything. Distance learning is made possible with no geographical restrictions placed upon the student in terms of access to a course he or she wants to study. The number of students applying for online courses has risen by 96% in the last few years. The hunger for knowledge is strong! While we must be careful that our learning comes from reputable sources only, the opportunity to research any subject from anywhere is truly incredible.

  • Designing trade fair booths that work

It costs time and money to be at a trade fair, so it’s important to make the most of it. It’s a competitive environment and you need to stand out. Thankfully, that is actually pretty easy to do with a little time and effort. Invest in a decent booth that you’ll be able to use time and again, and get creative.  Also make sure all your products get to the fair in time, safely and securely which you can do with a Security Seal sourced from companies such as acmeseals.co.uk which you could  Here are a few ideas.

    Giveaways

Everyone loves a freebie, but if you want to stand out from the crowd, think beyond a free biro. By investing in a higher-quality freebie, you’ll create a buzz and bring people to your booth.

    Get details

Creating a game or prize draw for bigger giveaways is a great way to attract attention. These should have a maximum impact, be relevant to your product or service, and they should ideally be fun and interactive. Request that people sign up to participate so you have their details, and then follow up with them after the show.

    Demonstrate

If you can, carry out live demos of your product or service. Focus on the value of the product to potential users rather than the features so they can get a real idea of the benefits. For example, at IFFA Messe Frankfurt, a leading international trade fair for the meat industry, a booth might demo new packaging that is cheaper or more user-friendly.

    Utilise technology

Touch screens and digital signs can be used to show how products and services work and offer up case studies and testimonials.

Using social media is another great way to reach out to people at trade shows, and it’s free. It will also go out to a wider audience of people who may have been unable to attend on the day. Show people what’s going on at your booth, then use hash tags related to the trade show to make sure it’s getting to the right people. You can also use social media to keep up-to-date with what’s going on in the industry with blog sites like Event Industry News.

Trade fairs are excellent marketing opportunities – just make sure you’re unique, interesting and interactive!

  • Post exercise routines you really should follow

Post-exercise recovery is important, though often overlooked. After each workout with a treadmill, a period of post-exercise recovery and cool-down is as important as actually doing the work itself; no matter if you focus on the arms, lower body, or work on your six-pack.

Often, in haste to get out of the gym, we can forget to complete this cool-down phase. But in doing so, you may lose the opportunity to give your body the attention and care it needs. Studies show that people who do these post-exercise recovery activities – such as cooling and stretching exercises – see the benefits of it in that they experience reduced soreness, and are ready to get going with another workout in a shorter amount of time. Here are some steps you should be taking after every workout:

    1. Cool-down exercises

As soon as you drop a dumbbell on your last set, or finish the last mile at the track or treadmill, you do not want to stop completely – you need to cool down. There are various ways to bring your heart rate down: some yoga poses and stretching, if you want, but many people choose light jogging, walking, or even jumping in the pool for a few laps. It’s really up to you – just make sure you take 10 or 15 minutes to actually bring your workout to close.

    2. Stretching

Going right from the cooling phase and into the stretch is often suggested by many coaches – and sometimes they are one in the same. If you do not feel like jumping on a treadmill for 10 minutes, targeted stretching routine might be a better option for you. Stretching will improve flexibility, which is essential for exercise and your daily life. Find out more about a Gym Dublin by visitng a site like https://southsidegym.ie/

    3. Use a foam roller

For those who have never used one, many fitness enthusiasts recommend using a roll, made of foam, and basically roll around on the floor. The benefits are that knots in the muscles can be soothed after a workout. You can also do this before exercise to help warm up as well. Foam rolls may seem a little unusual at first, but give them a shot and they might work wonders for your recovery time.

    4. Drinking water

This one is pretty obvious, but some people seem reluctant to do so. Just drink the water! Rehydration may be the most important element of any post-exercise routine, and you will not recover if you become dehydrated. After sweating out a ton of resources and reserves of water from your body, it just needs to be recharged. So, bring a bottle of water and make sure you are drinking enough to stay hydrated.

    5. Track your progress

It is now super easy and straightforward to track of your fitness and diet routine. There is a wealth of smartphone apps available and also devices such as FitBit, Apple Watches, and other smartwatches that can help you out. Or, if you prefer, you can use a more traditional pen and paper, or spreadsheet. The key here is to make sure you know what exercise you are doing and to track your improvement.

  • The Importance of Generator Servicing

A question that all plant owners / operators should be asking themselves is how often does the generator need servicing – how often and what needs to be done. It’s vital to ensure that your generator is serviced at regular intervals to avoid problems that could result in plant failure. Making sure that you schedule regular generator servicing will help you maintain your generator efficiency and provide emergency power for years to come.

Remember, speaking to a professional Generator Rental company at a site like Newburn Power Rental is a good idea. This is a great way to get advice and help you with your generator servicing needs to get the job done with great skill.

    Why do generators need servicing?

Here are some basic guidelines will make scheduling a servicing a walk in the park.  When thinking about how to service the generator, how often, and what needs to be done, ask yourself the following questions: how often do I run the generator? Generators that are used often will require more frequent servicing than a backup generator that is rarely used. No matter the amount of use, however, all generators do require a level of basic care, including:

Cleaning the generator: All generators must be cleaned and inspected for leaks every year.

Change Oil: The oil should be changed every 50-60 hours of use to improve reliability.

Replace Oil Filter: The oil filter should be replaced every time the oil is changed to ensure the new oil is being filtered properly.

Replace Air Filters: Air filters should be changed every year; a dirty air filter will not be able to attract the necessary amount of clean air.

Replace Spark Plug: The plugs should be changed after approximately every 100 hours of use. The spark plugs should also be checked during servicing generators to ensure they are not worn or cracked.

Check the battery: The battery power level should be checked as well as the general status of the battery. Make sure there is no visible corrosion on the battery or its connections.

These tasks should be carried out regularly; frequency depends on factors such as the type of generator and how much use it experiences. The generator should include recommendations on how often to service it – which might vary depending on the particular model.

  • An introduction to the Claddagh ring

The Claddagh ring, originating from a humble Galway fishing village in Ireland, is one of the world’s most recognisable items of jewellery. Popular with men and women around the globe, the historic Claddagh ring is unique in its symbolism representing love, loyalty and friendship.

    A significant design

The well-known design of the Claddagh ring, featuring two hands, a heart and a crown carries much significance. The two hands, clasped around a heart, signify friendship. The heart signifies love and the crown is a representation of loyalty and fidelity.

Ways of wearing a Claddagh ring

A traditional wedding ring in Irish culture, the way in which it is worn can depict different relationship statuses:

Single – The ring is worn on the right hand with the heart facing outwards
Relationship – The ring is worn on the right hand with the heart facing inwards
Engaged – The ring is worn on the left hand with the heart facing outwards
Married – The ring is worn on the left hand with the heart facing inwards
    A piece of Irish heritage

Ireland is a beautiful country steeped in history and tradition and with a burgeoning tourism industry.

With Irish holidays now being celebrated globally, St Patricks Day gifts such as those seen here https://www.shamrockgift.com/st-patricks-day are now exchanged across the globe.

A brief history of the ring

It is perhaps unsurprising that a ring associated with love, fidelity and romance takes its origins from a classic love story. There are several legends attributed to this ring. One of the main ones relates to a sailor called Richard Joyce who set sail from the Galway fishing village of Claddagh for the plantations of the West Indies in the 17th Century. Legend has it that the crew were kidnapped and sold into slavery, where Richard was trained as a goldsmith.

In 1689, William II, then King of England, demanded the release of all slaves and Richard was able to return to Galway to be with his true love. Unbeknown to the goldsmith who had bought Richard as a slave, Richard had been stealing specks of gold which he turned into the ring he gave to his beloved whom he married.

Later, Richard is believed to have set up his own goldsmith shop where he created more Claddagh rings.

  • How is XML used?

XML is a mark-up language used to provide a standard format for information, allowing for easier storage, transmission, access and display of data by applications.

    Specification

XML is a web technology, developed by the W3C and the XML specification, currently version 5.0 is available to see here: https://www.w3.org/TR/xml/)

    Legacy uses

XML can be used to separate content from design. This separation means that transforming the look and feel of a huge website can be achieved quickly and easily, by comparison with sites where content and design are integrated. Web content can be served to different devices, with different screen sizes, in a user-friendly way, using different stylesheets and templates, with the same XML data. In this way the same content and data can be stored once and repurposed and viewed in different ways without unnecessary duplication. This has been largely replaced with CSS and HTML5, but you may still come across XML in use in this way.

    Current uses

XML is still widely used to exchange data between computer applications. XML supports nesting of data, which can be very useful when sending data that includes subsets of information. XML uses a schema, which allows for validation of received data in a way that the alternative format JSON does not. XML is order dependent, so is great for sending and receiving data that has to be structured in a very specific order, but is more verbose than JSON. XXE (XML external entities) is a security vulnerability which needs careful avoidance by programmers. XML is used to create configuration files, particularly in Java environments.

    Conversion

You may find you need to quickly extract information or data from one format, and convert it into XML or another format. Information is often sent from one part of a business to another in PDF documents. PDF is a great format for ensuring accurate display across devices, and easy to read in browsers or to send via email. It can be hard to extract data from PDF documents for analysis. To easily transform data from PDF to Excel spreadsheet format, or to XML, companies such as https://pdftables.com/convert-pdf-to-excel offer a fast online service which can be a real time saver.

In summary, if you are sending data between applications which needs to be structured in a specific way, and may contain nested fields of information, consider using XML.
